Ipswich Boy to Play Pugsley in The Addams Family Musical

THEY'RE creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, and an Ipswich boy has joined them; the Addams Family.

Which character from the Addams Family are you most like? Click here to vote

Young Ipswich Grammar School student Jaxon Graham-Wilson has been chosen to play Pugsley in Sydney's Capitol Theatre production of The Addams Family - The Broadway Musical.

Landing the role came as an early birthday surprise for Jaxon, who turns 14 tomorrow.
"I've know for a while, but I had to keep it quiet until Sunday, when it was properly announced," Jaxon said. "I flew down to Sydney to audition after my mum found out about it, and we went back down last Monday to do the photo shoot with the other Pugsleys."

Jaxon will star alongside well-known actors John Waters and Russell Dykstra in the show.
The Collingwood Park boy said he would have no trouble getting into the character of Pugsley, Gomez and Morticia's son and brother to Wednesday.

"I've watched all the movies and TV shows and I saw the original cast on Broadway," he said.
Jaxon said he loved the "creepy" nature of the family.

"Pugsley is a bit devious and loves torturing his sister, so I'm basically always in character when I'm annoying my own sister," he joked.

The Addams Family production opens next March, and Jaxon will move to Sydney for nine months with his mother and sister.

"I'll be doing distance ed and my sister will go to school," he said.
"I want to travel and do shows when I'm older so this is exciting."

Family Facts
  • The Addams Family was created by American cartoonist Charles Addams.
  • It was first developed into a television series in the 1960s, and has since inspired films, books, videos and a musical.

Chitty Chitty Goes Off With a Bang Bang

THERE are live dogs, lots of children and a strong cast but the star of the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the amazing car of the title.

It really is a fantasmagorical machine that draws gasps of delight when it flies, in a genuinely magical moment.

Based on the 1968 film, the stage adaptation makes some judicious changes bringing in the Vulgarians, who are intent on stealing the car, right from the start - and adding jokes for the adults.
As the crackpot inventor Caractacus Potts, David Hobson reins in the eccentricity, giving a gently endearing performance.

Rachael Beck is lovely as Truly Scrumptious, Alan Brough and Jennifer Vuletic are thoroughly entertaining as the tantrum-throwing, toy-loving Baron Bomburst and his Baroness, while George Kapiniaris and Todd Goddard are a hoot as the bumbling Vulgarian spies.

Roger Hodgman directs, using Anthony Ward's clever, eye-catching design, with its set inspired by the idea of invention and machinery.

Energy-wise, the production could go up a gear at times and Dana Jolly's choreography lacks a little oomph but it's a fun show that clearly charmed the children around me and had the audience clapping along with the title song.

Mundine V Geale - Rivalry Set for Sydney

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, welcomed the announcement that Sydney will host the IBFWorld Middleweight Title Fight between bitter rivals Anthony Mundine and Daniel Geale on Wednesday 30 January, 2013, at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

“The announcement reinforces Sydney’s position as a global events city, with the NSW sports events calendar fast becoming the benchmark for other states,” Mr Souris said.

“The IBF World Middleweight Title fight between Anthony Mundine and Daniel Geale is expected to draw more than 2000 interstate visitors and generate almost $4 million in overnight visitor expenditure.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, said: “This is the first time two Australians have fought for the IBF World Middleweight title.

“Danny is the current IBF and WBA World Champion after unifying the titles in May and September this year becoming only the 4th Australian to achieve such a rare feat.

“Anthony is a former WBA and IBO world champion in middleweight and super-middleweight divisions.

“Everyone is aware of the intense rivalry between the pair and it promises to be an adrenaline-charged match between two great champions,” Mr Annesley added.

Anthony Mundine said he was honoured to be fighting in his home town in front of his fans.

“I'd like to thank Destination NSW for their assistance in ensuring this fight remains in Sydney and look forward to putting on a show for everyone to see on January 30.”

Daniel Geale said “This is the fight Australia wants to see and having the NSW Government’s support was a huge coup for this event and more importantly, for boxing in this country.”

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said: “The fight between Anthony Mundine and Daniel Geale will be a ‘cannot miss’ contest. Boxing fans across the country will be eager to seeing this extraordinary fight between two world champions held in NSW, the home of world class sport.”

The SKIF World Championships are being held at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre from November 22-24. Spectator tickets are available at www.ticketdirect.com.au and at the door.

NSW Secures State of Origin Coup

Sydney will host seven State of Origin matches over the next five years, including two in 2013, in a major coup for NSW rugby league fans.

NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, welcomed the announcement. “Today’s announcement is a win for fairness and a win for fans in rugby league’s heartland,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“The NSW Government, with Destination NSW and ANZ Stadium, fought hard to ensure the Blues played more often at home - not only for NSW fans, but for the economic boost major events like State of Origin bring to our state,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“Our two games in Sydney next year will be a huge boost to the Blues’ 2013 campaign as we look to breaking through for a long-awaited series win under Paul Gallen and new coach Laurie Daley.”

Minister for Tourism and Major Events George Souris said the announcement re-enforces Sydney as Australia’s premier sporting and major events destination.

“Ensuring NSW has secured its fair share of State of Origin games to 2017 will guarantee that NSW’s great facilities and unique attractions will be showcased to rugby league fans.

“Between 2013 and 2017, the State of Origin games will contribute over $65 million to the NSW economy, including visitor spend by overseas, interstate and intrastate visitors.

“I congratulate Destination NSW on its winning bid strategy which will contribute to achieving our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020.”

Pontoon Restaurant, Darling Harbour - Eating at Darling Harbour Without the Price Tag

Darling Harbour can be a bit of a tourist trap where you often pay high prices for a meal. Yet there are some establishments that serve a great hearty meal that won't break the bank and Pontoon is one of them. Located on the eastern side of Darling Harbour in Cockle Bay Wharf, it attracts glorious sunsets and fantastic views for those lazy afternoon meals.

Sunset view across Darling Harbour, perfect for a lazy afternoon meal.

Feeling a little peckish after walking around Sydney one day, we really didn't want to pull out the credit card to fill our hunger pangs. Most establishments were way out of the price range we were prepared to pay. And a meal in a rather ordinary fast food outlet surrounded by hordes of people was out of the question also.

What we wanted today was a great relaxed atmosphere where we could take in the stunning views sipping on a glass of wine with a well priced meal to round off our fun day out. Pontoon most certainly fitted the bill on all counts.

'Sunset over Kebabs' Marinated Spiced Lamb Kebabs and my glass of wine.

Pontoon has a massive expanse of outdoor seating covered by interconnecting umbrellas to keep the heat at bay during summer and equipped with heaters to keep you warm during winter. Perfect for the ultimate outdoor dining to enjoy the fresh air.

Now for those hearty inexpensive meals. Their menu offers eight wel- plated, simple and filling meals. I opted for the marinated Lamb Kebabs coated in paprika and other delicious spices, served with a small tub of tzatziki, plenty of crispy chips and a delightful salad with a light balsamic dressing @ $12.90.

Open Beef Burger, enough to feed the hungriest appetite.

One friend ordered the open style Beef Burger with melted cheese, salad and chips @ $9.90 and my other friend ordered their rather large Chicken Sandwich made with a grilled, moist chicken breast, mayonnaise, salad and chips. @11.90. The portions were quite generous and you could certainly share any of these meals between 2 children or a friend if your were only a little peckish.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich, enough for two to share.

I know we said we were only a little hungry. However it was in late afternoon where the lunch crowds had left, leaving us with plenty of space to choose a table and watch the sunset over the water. So we decided to make this our early dinner.

We leisurely ate our meals chatting over a glass of wine and watched the golden, glowing sunset over the water and buildings. It has such a great vibe, encouraging you to just kick back and relax. Later we ordered a large bowl of wedges to nibble on as we lingered throughout the rest of the afternoon.

Big bowl of potato wedges to nibble with your drinks.

There are eight bar-style meals ranging from $7.90 to $12.90 and five generous salad meals from $9.90 to $11.90 and of course the Seasoned Spicy Wedges served with chilli and sour cream @ $8.90, as well as single servings of chips to snack on.

Pontoon has a fully stocked bar with a pretty good wine list consisting of sparkling, whites, light reds and bold reds averaging $7.90 per glass. or $35 per bottle.

Meals are served from 11am and continue through to the wee small hours the following morning, some nights until 3am when the bar closes.

Bar and eatery - avoiding the lunch and dinner crowds!

Pontoon is definitely a great place to enjoy a relaxing, inexpensive meal with friends on those days when you don't want to damage your credit card. It's also fabulous for families as the bar is an open, outdoor space and can accommodate children quite easily.

A great eatery destination for tourists who need to watch their dollars in this expensive part of Sydney.

As the sun sets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Club Night begins with a resident DJ or live band providing you with some cruisy and dance music to get your motors running on their dance floor. Especially great if you are not in the under 25 age group.

Seagull playing the waiting game from a sympathetic customer.

Oh, a little fun word of warning. When the staff bring your meals to your table, they advise you to keep an eye on the seagulls and your food. I was half expecting a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie, having to guard my meal with my life. The seagulls however, are rather quite polite and stand at a distance waiting for you to throw them a morsel or two.

This one even limps on one foot anticipating a sympathetic act of kindness!

Rachael Beck is Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

RACHAEL Beck describes her character in the upcoming musical production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a strong, funny woman with an absolutely terrible name.

Beck will take on the role of Truly Scrumptious, an upper-class socialite who gets drawn into a world of outrageous adventure, evil child-catchers and magical flying cars.

A stalwart of both the stage and screen, Beck has previously played staring roles in Les Miserables, Cats, The Sound of Music and Singin’ in the Rain but despite her experience the 41 year old said this new role would not be without its challenges.

“In one of the opening scenes I hoon around the stage on a vintage motorbike with a sidecar,” Beck said.

“It’s a bit concerning because I nearly run over all the props and crash into different parts of the set.
“It’s great fun and there are so many interesting moments like that throughout the show.”

Opening at the Capitol Theatre on Friday, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an adaptation of the 1968 children’s film, based on a book by Ian Fleming.

Beck said the stage production followed the same storyline as the movie but parts of the script had been modernised to suit a current-day audience.

“I think it’s a lot funnier than the movie,” she said.

“People certainly won’t be let down by the production because it’s such a wonderful family show.

“I have this bad habit of falling in love with the characters I play and Truly Scrumptious is no different … hopefully the audience will do the same.”

  • Madame Tussauds Sydney wins gold in New Tourism Development category
  • Sydney Tower Eye wins silver in Major Tourism Attraction category

Merlin Entertainments Group attractions Madame Tussauds Sydney and the Sydney Tower Eye have won gold and silver respectively at the highly contested 2012 NSW Tourism Awards, held last night at Le Montage in Lilyfield.

Madame Tussauds Sydney took out the gold prize in the New Tourism Development category, while Sydney Tower Eye was awarded silver in the Major Tourist Attraction category. It is the first time that both attractions have entered the NSW Tourism Awards in any category.

Hywel Mathias, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Sydney was thrilled at the news, saying: “What a fantastic achievement for Madame Tussauds as a new and exciting attraction on the Sydney landscape”.
Sydney was selected as the location of the thirteenth Madame Tussauds in the world because of the global nature of the city, the volume of tourists and the Darling Harbour location.
Hywel continued: “The team meticulously took into consideration all elements of setting up an attraction to ensure nothing was missed and I am proud to say we have enjoyed great success since officially opening this year.

I am also extremely proud of my team who ensure every day that all our guests have a fun, interactive

Ian Wood, General Manager of Sydney Tower Eye said: “It’s a great honour to have won silver in the Major Tourist Attraction category and I would like to congratulate Blue Mountains National Park for a well-deserved win.

To be acknowledged as a finalist amongst other outstanding NSW attractions was an honour and I am
very proud of our team for all of their hard work and dedication”.

Sydney Christmas Carols

Santa's helper has given us the tips on Sydney's best Carols
Christmas Carols. They are the best of songs, they are the worst of songs. My apologies to Charles Dickens but I'm sure he wouldn't mind me paraphrasing his work. After all, he was somewhat of an expert on Christmas.

christmas carols, sydney christmas carols

Christmas carols really are a pretty mixed bag. They range from the traditional to the modern and the sublime to the ridiculous. And every year from late November to Christmas Day the whole of Sydney rings with the sounds of "Joy to the World", "Jingle Bells", "O, Holy Night!" and, God forbid, "I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Santa Baby".

In shopping centres and on street corners you'll be greeted by carol-singing elves and angels, choir boys, and girls clad in that faux fur-trimmed, red mini-skirted outfit favoured by Santa's helpers everywhere. You know, the one that results in a rather incongruous cross between Mrs Claus and a sexy snow bunny.

Christmas Carols events sprout up like mushrooms all over Sydney from late November. These range from the homey charm of the local school concert-cum-carols night to the celebrity-laden, big-budget events complete with orchestras and choirs.

Some of the contenders for Sydney's Best Christmas Carols event in 2012 are:

Sydney Christmas Family Village Concerts.
Carols, Santa and fireworks are a hallmark of these much-loved, free, local community events. This year's concert schedule is:
Rushcutters Bay: Saturday 1 December at Reg Bartley Oval, Waratah Street from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm
Rosebery: Sunday 2 December at Turruwul Park, Rothschild Avenue from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
Alexandria: Saturday 8 December at Alexandria Park Oval, Power Avenue from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.

Coogee Carols

Luxury Show Founders Split - Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal

Luxury Show Founders Split - Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal
Sydney will host two “luxury and experiential” shows in September 2013, with the cofounders and owners of this year’s inaugural Luxperience event in Sydney each going their own way (BEN breaking news). Luxperience is 50% owned by former Travelcorp founder Helen Logas and Rosemarie Sama, who headed up AIME for some years. Overnight Logas announced that she was the new ceo of Luxperience, while Sama “is no longer with the company”. And Sama has launched her own event, dubbed Luxe Events +

Travel Experiences (LETE) which is scheduled for 02-04 Sep at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal - the same dates and venue planned for Luxperience. It’s not clear where Luxperience will be held now, but according to Logas Virgin Australia has continued its major partner agreement and “dozens of exhibitors from around Asia Pacific and Australia have reconfirmed for 2013 and will be joined by product suppliers from additional destinations such as Europe, the Americas and Africa”.

Sama is pitching LETE as an evolution of Luxperience, saying “her event returns in 2013 with a new format and a new name”. She said feedback from this year showed huge demand, but that “a greater focus on experiential meetings and events was needed”.

Interestingly Sama resigned as a director of Luxperience Enterprises Pty Ltd on 01 Sep this year - before the show started - but according to ASIC records remains a 50% shareholder. Logas said Luxperience 2013 would include a Thought Leaders’ Forum dedicated to top end experiential travel, while Sama’s LETE will feature eight “fun and informative networking events”.

Sydney Christmas Sydney gets its Christmas sparkle on

The City of Sydney's Sydney Christmas 2012 will once again be stringing up twinkling lights, setting up Christmas trees, presenting concerts, and generally bringing the festive season to life and into the hearts of children within the council's boundaries in 2012. One lucky child will even win the chance to ride with Santa in his sleigh to Martin Place and light the giant Christmas tree. How's that for some Christmas magic?

Martin Place Children's Concert and Tree Lighting

The event will be compered by the X Factor's Luke Jacobz and singer Paulini is the headline performer.

There will also be fireworks and kids' showbags for $2. Proceeds will go to the Australian Childrens Music Foundation, who provide free music education and instruments to disadvantaged children.
