'Beliebers' being urged to plan ahead of Justin's Sydney gigs

Sydney's 'Beliebers' are being urged to organise their transport ahead as changes to the infrastructure in Sydney Olympic Park, and possible cell phone outages, may cause significant delays.

More than 77,000 people are expected to attend the events around Sydney Olympic Park this Friday and Saturday and the extra traffic, road closures, parking availability coupled with no major event bus service will affect all ticket holders coming to the venue.

Special arrangements have been put in place by Sydney Olympic Park to assist attendees.

People driving to the precinct are strongly urged to pre-book their parking ahead of time and to arrive early to avoid delay. Parking is limited and will fill fast.

Pick up and drop off points have been established but there will be limited access to the roads around Allphones Arena as road closures for the upcoming V8 Supercars are in place.

A suggested meeting point after the concert is at Gate 3 on Olympic Boulevard which is only a short walk from the drop off and pick up zone.

Mobile phone coverage may also be unavailable at various times throughout the day as large numbers of people accessing the network can cause outages.

Concert goers are being encouraged to make plans ahead of time if meeting friends and family to avoid any distress.

$1 Million For Grabs As Biggest Poker Tournament Heads To Sydney

The  biggest poker tournament ever held in NSW will start in Sydney next month with a prize pool of more than $1 million.

The National Poker League, in conjunction with the Asian Poker Tour and The Star, will present APT Sydney 2013 - the main event of the Star Summer Series - on December 5-8.

During the past three years of hosting poker events throughout Australia, the NPL has amassed a base of more than 350,000 players.

The APT name and the prize pool is expected to attract about 600 participants.

The 2005 world poker champion and NPL spokesman Joe Hachem said he expected next month's tourna-ment to be a great opportunity for amateur players in Australia to play with some of the world's best.

"For most players and for me it's the competition which makes a great poker tournament," he said.

"Poker is the sort of dynamic game where it changes all the time and no game is the same.

"You are constantly being challenged and you never know what is going to happen or how people are going to play.

"You might think you know what the other players are going to do but then they do something different that defies logic and for that to happen in a game generally considered to be based on logic, it can provide some unexpected challenges and excitement."

NPL managing director Richard O'Neill said he expected the tournament to be unlike anything NSW pokers enthusiasts had seen before.

"We have wanted to run a $1 million tournament for a while and working with The Star has made it possible," he said.

"This is the first time we have put something together like this and we expect it will be the largest poker tournament in NSW history."

■ Participants can either win their tickets at selected NPL regional events (npl.com.au), via satellite games at The Star or via direct buy-ins

■ APT Sydney will be held at The Star casino, Pyrmont, on December 5-8

Sydney Festival 2014 FREE Events

Metro Hotels have partnered up with Sydney Festival 2014 to celebrate a summer of art, fun, shows and exhibitions all around Sydney.

The best of our city is back with a vengeance as Sydney Festival returns to its favourite indoor and outdoor venues throughout Sydney and beyond to present a huge and diverse program of free events. Comprised of 104 events, a staggering 21 are free in the 2014 Festival.

There’s no better way to get into the swing of summer in Sydney than by enjoying a free outdoor concert in the heart of the city, with 60,000 of your closest friends. Headlining Summer Sounds in The Domain and our opening weekend celebrations in style is the disco queen, Chaka Khan. Join us in a singalong extravaganza of hits spanning from the early 70s right up until the present day.

Bring the whole family and catch some of the Festival’s hottest acts free on January 10!

At Sydney Festival 2013, Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s 15-metre high yellow Rubber Duck made quite the splash in Darling Harbour, so we’ve brought it back. Parramatta residents and visitors are invited to Parramatta Park to get up-close-and-personal with Sydney’s favourite five-storey yellow bird.

Merchants Store may look like an ordinary 19th century Sydney building from afar, until you spot the people dangling from the windows, climbing up the walls and crawling on the roof…The life-size building façade is overshadowed by a giant mirror positioned at a precise 45 degree angle to the ground allowing the general public to play on the building layout, marvelling at their gravity-defying tricks and newfound ability to scale walls and perch on the rooftop.

Taking over a third of our newly expanded Festival Village in Hyde Park, Sacrilege, will be enjoyed equally by kids and kids at heart. Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller’s life-size bouncy castle version of Stonehenge has delighted kids of all ages around the UK, and is heading down under for Sydney Festival 2014. Boxwars will also bring its elaborate cardboard battalion to Festival Village to present hands-on workshops for kids of all ages.

Immersive installations will pop up across the city during the 2014 Festival including free events FUNPARK and The Very Near Future. The amusement parks that once graced Mount Druitt are long gone, but in January we will be welcoming back the crowds in the serious-minded fun of FUNPARK, whilst at Artspace The Very Near Future will find you in the backlot with the cast and crew of a film noir in the making.

Inviting you to explore the idea that all human life is the result of chance, Christian Boltanski presents his first major Australian installation, Chance. Responding to the architecture and scale of Carriageworks, this immense and complex installation allows you to witness lives unfolding, following the rhythm of births and deaths across the globe.

Bernard Tomic's Return Buoys Sydney Officials

HIS life might still hold some uncertainties but organisers believe Benard Tomic will be in the right frame of mind to try to defend his Sydney International title in January.
Tournament director Craig Watson is a relieved man being able to confirm that Tomic has signed on again for the combined ATP-WTA event (January 5-11) at Sydney Olympic Park courts.
“To win his first (ATP) title was an important breakthrough for him but equally important for us to get him back as he's a crowd-pleaser,” Watson said. “His tennis is great to watch.
“I've found that with tennis players when they come back to defend titles they grow an extra leg.”
Tomic's personal life as well as his professional hiccups with his coaching arrangements so often brings the Queenslander into the headlines.
In the lead-up to Sydney last January police were called to the roof of a Gold Coast hotel where Tomic and mates were involved in a scuffle in a hot-tub to celebrate his 20th birthday.
His 21st birthday passed in October without incident.
But the fall-out from the eight-month suspended sentence handed to his father John Tomic for assaulting former warm-up partner Thomas Drouet in May is ongoing.
The ATP and ITF have banned Tomic from being an accredited person at tournaments, including the past three grand slams and next year's Australian Open. Tomic Snr can however buy a ticket to the Sydney International.
Tomic was due to name a new coach this month, but there has been no announcement as yet.
Watson said Tomic showed last time on Ken Rosewall Arena he could handle the pressure of both opponents and public opinion.
“It was a great win by him because he was coming off the back of some issues with his father and Tennis Australia back then too,” Watson said yesterday.
“But he played an absolute fantastic tournament last time.”
Tomic has held a consistent ranking - still No51 in the world - for the past season, although he ended it poorly losing in the first round of his last five events.
Watson also named world No5 Juan Martin Del Potro and Poland's Wimbldeon semi-finalist, and world No21, Jerzy Janowicz as Sydney contenders.
Del Potro enjoyed a boom end of the season making three finals back-to-back and winning two - Tokyo and Basel. The 25-year-old Argentine also made the semis at Wimbledon, falling to Novak Djokovic.

Celtic Women - Live In Concert Australia

With the Sydney show date re-scheduled, our four lovely, warm, strong and very gifted celestial sirens are sure to deliver a stunning evening performance combined with the sounds and sensibility blended with breath-taking renditions of contemporary ballads alongside traditional music from the Emerald Isle.

Along with the distinct musical direction of Emmy® nominated musical producer, David Downes, the 2014 tour will feature a new stage production and the return of such enduring fan favourites as “You Raise Me Up” and “Orinoco Flow”.

Earlier this year, “Celtic Woman” vocalists Lisa Lambe, Susan McFadden and Celtic violinist Máiréad Nesbitt welcomed new addition - singer Máiréad Carlin - a talented young native of Derry in Ireland who already possesses a prestigious musical resume that includes performing at the 2013 BBC TV Gala concert "Sons and Daughters," a UK and Ireland concert tour with Don McLean and performing for the President of Ireland.

As a further highlight of this tour, “Celtic Woman” will be joined by 50 bright young stars from the Australian Girl’s Choir.  Known the country and indeed the world over for their angelic voices, the AGC is our country's leading performing arts organisation for girls and currently have over 4,000 choristers in training.   They have performed at many memorable events including World Reconciliation Day for Nelson Mandela, Ellen DeGeneres’ welcome party, Queen Elizabeth II and President Barack Obama during official functions at Parliament House, Canberra.

The return visit to Sydney of “Celtic Woman” is sure to be an uplifting mix of timeless tradition and contemporary craft, transcending national and cultural borders to touch the hearts of a very devoted international fan base.

Timely Break for Lucky Winners

Exhausted from battling the recent fires: Seniors Lifestyle Competition winners Deb and Max Baigent from King Creek are delighted with their prize of a trip for two to Sydney

AFTER months of battling intense bush fires, one local volunteer will get a little respite he so well and truly deserves.

Captain of the King Creek Rural Fire Service Max Baigent and his wife Deb have been the lucky winners of the Senior Lifestyle Metro Sydney Escape competition.
The timing, the thankful and humble couple said, could not have been better.
Mr Baigent arrived home from the Harrington fires the day his wife heard the news.
"It's been a raging battle down there," he said. "We had a week of battling intense fires and I got back around midnight."
Utterly exhausted, the 57-year-old had mentioned earlier that he needed a holiday.
At first, his wife's words simply didn't register when she said they would be spending two nights in Sydney at the Metro Apartments on Darling Harbour.
"We're just so thankful to Senior Lifestyle for running this competition," he said. "All firies have just had a run of it the past five months, but all the crews have been doing such a fantastic job."
Her work with the Bundaleer Care Service also keeps Mrs Baigent on her feet. "You get so busy that you just don't take the time to rest," she said. "It makes it a bit different when you win something."
The 55-year-old said it would be nice to see her husband taking a break.
"It's an exhausting task they do, they get tired and weary but they all do it because they love it," she said. "It's their way of giving back to the community."
From the sleepy hollow of King Creek, to the hustle and bustle of the big smoke - the views over Darling Harbour will be a big change for the King Creek couple. "It's going to be very different, but it's going to be fantastic to have a bit of time to relax," Mr Baigent said.

Netball World Championships to Complete Trifecta of Major Events in Sydney in 2015

SYDNEY will be sport central in 2015, with a world netball championship to be played in front of world record crowds completing a trifecta of major events to be hosted by the Olympic city in 2015.

SYDNEY will be sport central in 2015, with a world netball championship to be played in front of world record crowds completing a trifecta of major events to be hosted by the Olympic city in 2015.

Sydney will host Asian Cup games, which include the decider at Stadium Australia, and ICC Cricket World Cup matches in February/March with the world netball championships to be played from August 7-16.

These three international showcase events will be complemented by regular Sydney sporting events such as State of Origin rugby league, the Golden Slipper, the annual ANZAC DAY test between the Dragons and Roosters and the Sydney to Hobart yacht race on Boxing Day.

Yesterday tournament officials confirmed netball fans will be delivered more games and better quality matches than ever before at a world championship event.

The tournament, where Australian and New Zealand will clash early in the tournament instead of just in the decider thanks to a format revamp, will also be played at the biggest stadium in the championships history with Allphones Arena at Sydney Olympic Park able to host around 17,000 fans.

"They will be world record crowd I am certain,'' said Netball Australia boss Kate Palmer who helped formulate the new format which will pit top teams against each other in both the rounds and the finals series for the first time.

Michelle den Dekker, the last captain to lead an Australian team to victory at home, said the win back in 1991 remains a highlight of her career.

"I can still remember the noise from our final. You seriously couldn't hear a thing,'' said den Dekker of Australia's one-goal win over New Zealand at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

When den Dekker was in charge she and her teammates earned around $8.40 a day as top netballers, lived in a Sydney university dormitory, ate meals in a cafeteria and functioned without a team doctor, nutritionist or psychologist.

When de Dekker, now the Australian assistant coach, is next involved in a home challenge in 2015 players and team staff will stay in a five-star hotel, have access to the best technical and medical resources available to elite athletes and be watched by a record crowd of around 17,000.

And while things have changed for the better in terms of funding, backing and general support for netball since the last event in 1991, den Dekker is still hoping for the same result as Australia achieved _ a cliffhanger win by the hosts.

"That game, the final, sort of started those great, one goal battles that have been going on ever since,'' den Dekker said of a match which helped change the perception of netball as a "girlie" sport to that of a tough, physical contest between highly skilled athletes..

"It was an event that really changed the way people looked at us. We went from women who played a game in a park in the eyes of people, to real athletes who people recognised.''

Current Australian coach Laura Gietz, just six when the famous final between the two powers of netball was played in Sydney, doesn't remember then Prime Minister Bob Hawke pumping the air in triumph or embracing Australian players after the win.

"I was six. I don't remember it at all, sorry,'' she laughed.

"But I do know how special it is to play at home and I can't wait.''
